First Things First:
A Design Manifesto

  • Art Direction, Copy, Production, Motion Graphics, Graphic Design, Indesign, Photoshop, AfterEffects

A self-initiated project to leave with potential agency employers, this work is based on the infamous “First Things First”, a design manifesto first written in 1964 by Kevin Garland and renewed in 2000 by Rick Poynor.

Originally, the View Master was intended to showcase a reel of my work as a design student, but that work soon became irrelevant. I redesigned the piece to capture the significance of the manifesto with more sophistication. It’s now meant as a creative calling card, showcasing how I intend to use my skills in the world.

  • Before View Masters became the 1980s popular children’s toy, we know of today, they were originally intended as an educational device for adults in the 1940s and ‘50s. The United States military recognized the potential for personnel training, purchasing 100,000 viewers and nearly six million reels from 1942 to the end of World War II in 1945.

I simplified the ideas in the manifesto by rewriting the copy into positive actionable measures that all designers would do well to keep in mind, in the context of the current cultural and environmental climate. I chose stylized design elements from war propaganda posters such as cut-out photographs against muted backgrounds and a clear call to action in order to convey urgency and priority.

Food & Drink

  • Illustration, Typography Design

    Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator

A personal project for Coppola Limited Release Director’s wine. Taking inspiration from his famous work in film, I chose a film strip as the concept for the design. I created simple vector illustrations including a men’s suit lapel and fedora, as further homage to The Godfather. I paired a scripted font with a heavy weighted bold font for drama and elegance.

Music

  • Creative direction, Illustration, Typography Design

    Photoshop, Illustrator, Watercolor, Mixed Media

A personal project for Jame’s Blake album on vinyl record. Inspiration for the design was taken from the song “Limit to Your Love” originally recorded by Feist. The watercolor illustration on the front and back of the packaging are a reference to the lyrics in the song, “Like a waterfall in slow motion, like a map with no ocean.”

Two face’s emerge from rock face in longing to form the shape of a hourglass against the backdrop of waterfall. Hand transferred type was created for the detail on the back.

Beauty

  • Graphic Design, Brand Identity, Typography

    Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator

Williamsburg Dental Arts wanted to rebrand their identity and associated packaging assets. I created patterned design for their retail bags, labels for their custom designed toothpaste jars and embossed logos and wordmarks for their toothbrush boxes.
